Today, we’re trying ShakeAway’s Blackcurrant milkshake. Now as Wikipedia knows, “Blackcurrant berries have a distinctive sweet and sharp taste popular in jam, juice, ice creams, and liquers.” They didn’t think to mention milkshakes, so we have to make up our own minds!

Battenburg

Today we’re going to review ShakeAway’s Battenburg milkshake. As the story goes, battenburg cake is so named because it was created to celebrate the marriage of Queen Victoria’s granddaughter to Prince Louis of Battenberg.* Each square represented one of the four Battenberg princes. Battenburg cake is more easily characterised by its image than its flavour, so let’s see how it fares in teeny tiny pieces.
Rachel, the manager of the Bristol branch, has an interesting combination as her favourite — Raspberry & Wham Bar. Try it today!
Banoffee Muffin
Aug 25
Today, we’re reviewing ShakeAway’s Banoffee Muffin milkshake. Now this isn’t a Banoffee Pie, as invented in 1974 by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie of The Hungry Monk restaurant in East Sussex, this is a muffin-ey derivative. ShakeAway uses muffins from the Quordon Muffin Company, which they describe as a “superb moist eating American style muffin with home baked texture and appearance.” High claims — let’s see how they stand up.
Banana
Aug 23
Banana is one of the few ShakeAway milkshakes that other, lesser milkshake places might actually do. So if you’re going to Shakeaway, why have such a common milkshake? There’s a few reasons, actually. First of all, Shakeaway uses fresh bananas instead of just ‘banana flavour.’ And secondly, you can upgrade that normal banana into a cool Grand Prix Shakeaway — Banana, Additude, and Mini Oreo wheels!
We’re gonna be reviewing just the normal Banana though, in the interest of fairness. Let’s have a look!
In what must have amounted to a failure of communication, we have printed an untruth. Lizzie, the Oxford ShakeAway manager, has written in to say that in fact, her favourite shake is not Cucumber & Ferrero Rocher, but instead Coconut & Cucumber! She has a few other favourite combinations, which are:
- Ferrero Rocher with Battenberg
- Cappuccino Muffin with Sesame Snaps
- Choca Mocha with Strawberry
- Banana and Malt with Cream on top
- Mandarin with Oreo
So, good readers, get out there and try them! I know we will. And our apologies to Lizzie for the misprint
Bakewell Tart
Jul 29
Bakewell tarts originated from the town of Bakewell. Those used by ShakeAway are Mr. Kipling’s variety, also known as Cherry Bakewells — small jam-filled cakes iced with marzipan, and topped with a glace cherry. Few would debate that they are delicious alone or with a cup of tea, but how will they hold up in a milkshake?
Apricot
Jul 27
Apricots are a curious fruit, well known since ancient times and now grown and loved all over the world. Among American tank crews however, “apricots are taboo, by superstition. Tankers will not eat apricots, allow apricots onto their vehicles, and often will not even say the word “apricot”. This superstition stems from Sherman tank breakdowns purportedly happening in the presence of cans of apricots.” So don’t give this shake to a tanker, but what about the rest of us? How does the tangy apricot mix with Shakeaway’s lovely ice cream? We’re keen to find out!
Apple Pie
Jul 24
Another fruity flavour today, with Apple Pie! Now ShakeAway makes their Apple Pie milkshakes with Bramley Apple Pies, which I quite enjoy, so I’m looking forward to seeing how it tastes in milkshake form!
Just a little post, to share some secrets we’ve learned from our friendly Shakettes.*
