SchwarzejohannisbeereToday, we’re trying ShakeAway’s Blackcurrant milkshake. Now as Wikipedia knows, “Blackcurrant berries have a distinctive sweet and sharp taste popular in jam, juice, ice creams, and liquers.” They didn’t think to mention milkshakes, so we have to make up our own minds!

So the first thing I thought of when I saw we were doing Blackcurrant was that ubiquitous fruit drink, Ribena. Would this be a thick, milky version of the drink? Would that be a good thing, or a bad thing?

Luckily, I didn’t have to work it out. You can taste it as soon as you put the straw to your lips — this isn’t Ribena. Well, it’s hard to say, really. It’s a sharp flavour, definitely not citrusey, but tangy like I expected. It was also kind of yogurty.

It’s an odd flavour, because the blackcurrants don’t mix entirely. There are many seeds and bits in the drink, making it a much more varied experience than most ShakeAway milkshakes. There’s the lovely, plain ShakeAway milkshake backdrop, but with this sharp berry flavour. And for the most part it works well, and it certainly looks wonderful, but there’s something about this milkshake that just doesn’t sit right with me. Maybe it’s my inexperience with Blackcurrants outside a juice carton, or my American tastes, but this one I can only recommend to fans of the blackcurrant proper. Maybe it’s just me — what do you think of the Blackcurrant shake?
